Full moon

Tonight's full moon is called: The Full Beaver Moon or The Frost Moon. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the traps needed to be set before the water froze to make sure that there would be a supply of warm winter furs.

Music Monday

Music: Not Meant to Be by Theory of a Deadman and Frost by Rachel Sage.

Be sure to check out Paperbackswap.com  It's a great site.

How it works:  you sign up for a free account
enter the ISBN numbers of books that you want to get rid of
when someone wants your book you receive an email
you pay to send the book (the sender pays, the receiver gets it for free)
you receive 1 credit which you can now use to request a book for free

Two bits of advise. First, if you want a book and it's not available, put it on your "wish list". When someone enters the book into the system, it will automatically be put on hold for you. You will then receive an email asking if you still want the book and then you can say yes or no. Second, when you sign up, be sure to enter any "special conditions". My conditions include: non smoking homes, hard cover books need their dust jackets, no withdrawn library books, no tape/stickers/writing. Seems like alot but I'm kind of picky:)

Music Monday

I want to share the first 3 songs that my yoga instructor plays at the start of every class: First is Om Asatoma, Second is Gayatri Mantra and the third is Tumare Darshan. All three are sung by Deva Premal. Tumare Darshan is my favorite. I went to goggle and found the translation on spiritvoyage.com:

The season has arrived where
I will finally see you and dance
with you,
With the breathing in of joy
it is time to live in bliss.

RT Booklovers Convention 2013

Ever heard of the RT booklovers convention? Me neither till this year. This past April, it was held in Chicago. Carol and I went and had a blast!! The convention is a few days long but we went for the saturday book fare. They had a large room filled with authors ready to sign books. Some of the authors even have free swag (buttons, bookmarks, ect)!!! Some bring their latest book that you may purchase, but you are not required to buy any books. You may bring books from home. While you're waiting in line, a guy comes around with a stamp that will put an "invisible mark" on your personal books. Then at checkout, they pass a light over the books you have so they can see which need to be purchased, so it's imperative that you get your books marked. After the book fare, there are workshops, then there is a evening party (some of the authors attend and have more free stuff). All was included in the one day fee. 2013 will be in Kansas City. The web site is rtconvention.com They already have a list of authors that plan to attend and it's already a large list!!!

Music Monday

Music for this wk: The Trick is to Keep Breathing by Garbage and Eric's song by Vienna Teng.

This past summer, Carol and I went to Dayton OH to a book signing for Lauren Kate. It was held at Books a Million. She started with a reading from her latest book, answered questions about her work and then signed everything put in front of her. This tour was to promote the last book in her series Fallen/Torment/Passion/Rapture.

Second Fav Poe

The Masque of The Red Death was originally published as The Mask of The Red Death (1842). The change puts emphasis on the masquerade ball. Prince Prospero and 1,000 nobles have taken refuge in a walled abbey to escape the Red Death. There are 7 colored rooms: blue, purple, green, orange, white, violet and the last one is black and is illuminated by a scarlet light. In the black room is also a large ebony clock that chimes at each hour. At each time the clock sounds, the crowd stops talking or dancing and the orchestra stops playing. Once the clock stops chiming, they continue what they were doing. At midnight things change!!! (wiki)

Pretty cool castle, right?

Poe and The Raven Rocks!!!!

Tis the season for cool winds and things that go bump in the night. The Raven is my favorite Poe. I will talk tomorrow about my second fav.

Edgar Allan Poe: Born Jan 19, 1809 in Boston and died in Baltimore on Oct 7, 1849 (yes, only 40 yrs old). "He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career." (Wiki)

The Raven: "First published in Jan 1845." "It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracking the man's slow fall into madness. The lover, often identified as being a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore" ". (Wiki)

Happy Sunday

Books on the Banks is a yearly book fare in Cincinnati, OH. This year it was held on Oct 20th. I haven't seen a date for next year but will post it once I find out. There was one author of interest to me. Her name is Rae Carson and she has written The Girl of Fire and Thorns series. She is currently on tour to promote book 2. Book 3 is due out sometime next year. I'm not able to comment on the books as I have not read them yet, but they were recommended by Carol, who has not steered us wrong. I don't mind reading a series that is incomplete as it's fun to be in on "the ground floor" (Brooke needs to get on board :) )When authors have a new book coming out, the publisher will have them travel to promote the book. It's fun to talk with them, get the book signed and get a picture taken. Sometimes they have goodies like buttons and bookmarks that match the book. The goodies are called "swag". That's all for now. Have a great sunday. Warning: full moon tomorrow peeps!!! More info to follow.

Music Monday

Happy monday peeps!! Music suggestions for monday: Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode
I will possess your heart: Death Cab For Cutie

To all those with smart phones...You can get a free Nook app. Why is this interesting you ask? Barnes and Noble will give you a free sample of a book for your nook. Usually it's the first chapter or so. How does one perform this valuable task? Once the book has been released, go to Barnesandnoble.com and type in the name of your book in the search engine. On the far right side of the page, you will find it under the add to cart button. It will say free sample. I like to read the free sample especially if it's a book I'm not sure I want to read. I like to think that the first chapter or so will give me a feel for the book and help me decide whether it deserves a spot on my to-read list or not. What do you think? Is the first chapter enough to judge the book? How much of the book do you read before you decide: thumbs up or thumbs down? Either comment below or my email is in the upper right hand corner.

Book signing event

Fierce Reads Tour at Cover to Cover bookstore in Columbus, OH

I give you, the amazing Leigh Bardugo and her fantastic read.

Saturday, October 20, 2012

My sister in law (henceforth to be referred to as Carol) recently went to a stop on the Fierce Reads Tour held in Columbus OH. Four authors attended. The evening started with a panel discussion, questions from the audience and ended with a book signing. The questions from the audience were interesting. Questions included topics like: do you write exclusively on computer or prefer paper?, who is your favorite character to write?, which character is the hardest to write?, do you have the entire story planned out in advance or work on the fly and see where the story takes you? and do you work from an outline?. The author I went to see was: Leigh Bardugo. She is the author of Shadow and Bone. Wonderful book with great characters and great story. It will be a trilogy. The sequel (Siege and Storm) comes out June 4, 2013 with the last book (Ruin and Rising) due 2014. This series is not a mindless read. Leigh (pronounced Lee) is a graduate of Yale. Definitely a 5 out of 5 raven choice.
Hello and welcome to my new spot in the world:)
